Welcome to The Briar Patch Blog Site
Welcome to The Briar Patch official blog site. This blog is created to share ideas, answer questions, offer advice and suggestions for the special events in which children participate. Most commonly, subjects will involve flower girls and flower girl dresses. We will also have wonderful tidbits to share concerning ring-bearers, children's special occasion wear in general, birthday party attire, and so much more!
Our first publication of entries will answer questions most frequently asked and expand on advice that is also commonly requested.

You seem to be making less and less dressy dresses for teens when we need them more and more. Dresses available to them in department stores and malls are poorly made from cheap fabrics in overly seductive styles. What's a mother to do for a girl who wants to go to a spring dance or other dressy occasion? Help Briar Patch!

We continue to struggle here with current styles for even little girls. One objective of The Briar Patch is to offer safe and sensible (as sensible as special event clothing can possibly be) options for families in terms of dresses for girls and suits for boys. Boys' suits are not such a tremendous challenge, but girls' dresses are a challenge for both criteria. Boys' suits are a shirt (mostly long sleeved), vest, jacket, and tie! You cannot push the limit on what is appropriate in this traditional and well respected ensemble.
Girls and dresses, however, is a huge, huge world of endless style options. Too often, we feel, style options are imploded with "fashion" options. While we are very appreciative of trends and nuances that make dresses beautiful, unique, and fun...we do not like the "high fashion" influence that will have little girls dressing like young women. It is an immense challenge. Many manufacturers are watching the same shows your girls watch on television. What is different today is that our second through fifth graders are watching shows and movies about high school aged children. And these are not your typical high school girls either; they are surfing champions, pop stars, and even mermaids. Not much chance for traditional princess cut dresses on these shows. Parents are now very often at odds with their daughters concerning what is "cool" vs. what is really appropriate in terms of a girl's special occasion dress.
While we carry sizes up to about 16, all our designers are specifically children's dress designers. The Briar Patch is a niche business focusing on children, though many of our larger sizes fit teenage girls very well. We are not be able to offer a line of dresses specifically for teen-agers unless we reinvent our business. Right now, we are not ready to take that step.
However, in dealing with younger girls, we perhaps can offer some advice. In our experience, there is usually a common "thread" of some detail that attracts a girl to her "dream dress". Look closely at what may be a repeating theme in her favorite dresses she brings to you or picks out of magazines. It could be a color, a fabric treatment, a style detail. Identify one or two things that she REALLY likes, and you may be able to find comparable, more appropriate alternative dresses through an internet search. Teens and tweens are a very finicky group who know specifically what they like; often times what they like is to feel like a grown-up. So, it is a challenge in terms of reconciling what is "in fashion" with what is appropriate.

My husband was in your area and called me to inform about the exquisite children's clothing you guys have.I have 2 little boys and he was very impressed by suites you carry for them and I'm shocked cause he never notices anything in the clothing department. But he was right I'm impressed also. I know where there holiday wear is coming from this year. I rarely see things that are dressy yet elegant for boys and I'm a very picky shopper I found a new favorite.
